The bill would stave off a shutdown and keep the government funded through Dec. 11. The government would shut down Oct. 1 if the bill is not passed. Senate Republicans balked at the original House bill that didn’t replenish funds for the Commodity Credit Corporation, to ensure farm aid payments continue. The legislation would keep every federal agency funded at current levels through Dec. 11, as none of the regular appropriations bills for fiscal year 2021 will be completed in time. Mnuchin said before the House Financial Services Committee: “The president and I remain committed to providing support for American workers and businesses. I believe a targeted package is still needed and the administration is ready to reach a bipartisan agreement.” Mnuchin noted that President Donald Trump still supports $1,200 second stimulus checks for individuals and $2,400 for married couples and joint filers. Mnuchin, like Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell, said that more stimulus is needed to spur economic recovery. Mnuchin said another relief package would focus specifically on helping kids — perhaps through money to schools — and protecting jobs in hard-hit industries like travel and restaurants. Mnuchin added that there is “broad bipartisan support for extending the PPP,” especially to help small businesses. “Both employment and overall economic activity, however, remain well below their pre-pandemic levels, and the path ahead continues to be highly uncertain,” Powell said. “The downturn has not fallen equally on all Americans. Those least able to bear the burden have been the most affected." Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) believes a stimulus deal can get done.. Pelosi has said that Democrats are holding out for a larger stimulus deal and refuse to pass legislation on a piecemeal basis—even on areas of bipartisan agreement—as the Republicans have proposed. It’s unclear when or if there can be a larger stimulus deal. President Trumps wants a bigger stimulus package. President Donald Trump urged Republicans last week to support a bigger economic-aid package, but many senators doubled down against it. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said recently that Democrats were holding out for a larger stimulus agreement. "We have to meet their needs, not give the president a chance to just say, 'I'm going to put my name on a check, send it out, and don't talk to me about food, rent, first responders, healthcare workers, the virus, or anything else,'" Pelosi said. "That's all he wants, is his name on a check that goes out." New dates for the stimulus bill to pass to get checks out. The House, is prepared to postpone the start of its next break, originally scheduled for Oct. 2, until a deal is reached. If the bill passes the Senate on or by Oct. 9, the House could pass it after that date. And if negotiators close in on a deal, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell could also compel the Senate to stay in session longer, or to come back early to vote on a proposal. After the bill passes the house and senate, President Trump, who signed the bill into law and checks would be sent out the same week.
